What’s the Story?
I was listening to Conjure Music/Blues while I painted this, knowing I wanted to capture a head emerging from a vase. Funny enough, my sketches rarely resemble the final piece. As I worked, the figure started to feel like an ancestral presence…a force of nature, perhaps the energy of water itself. It may look eerie to some, but to me, this face feels like protection, a quiet strength. Like water, she’s ready to receive whatever you offer, with open arms. There’s also a sense of rising above the depths…of emerging from your emotions, controlling your breath while you sit with the depths of your soul. Olokun, Yemaya... they swim with us.
