The Monsters Under the Bed
12 × 15
What’s the Story?
I think I painted this around 4 a.m., coming down from a trip. Out of nowhere, the thought of “monsters under the bed” popped into my head. Why? Who knows. But it led me down a rabbit hole of questions: Who thinks about the monsters under the bed? Who cares for them?
As I sat with that thought, this figure appeared in my mind—so I quickly sketched him out. For a while, he just sat on my table, quietly staring back at me. Ready to play. Wondering why I kept ignoring him.
Now, as I write this, I’m reminded of that trip—how many of my demons I faced that day. Maybe this figure was my brain’s way of gently saying: Don’t be afraid of the monsters under the bed (i.e your shadows). Every encounter doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Your perception decides how you want to engage—with fear or with curiosity. Maybe even with play."
